Every Arkansas ABC permit expires on 30 June, no matter when it was issued. Renew before that date. Miss it and the late fee escalates in two steps: from 1 July to 29 August you pay an additional half the original permit price, and from 30 August to 28 October the additional fee goes higher again. Put 1 May in your calendar as the reminder, not 30 June.
When does my Arkansas liquor permit expire?
30 June. All of them, every year, regardless of when yours was issued or when you bought the business. Arkansas runs a single statewide permit year.
This trips up new owners constantly, because most licences in most industries run twelve months from issue. If you took over a restaurant in February, your permit does not have a year on it. It has until 30 June.
Set the reminder for early May. Renewal is not the kind of thing you want to discover during a June that also contains a holiday weekend and a broken walk-in.
What does it cost if I am late?
The late fee comes in two escalating bands. From 1 July to 29 August, the additional late fee is half the original permit price. From 30 August to 28 October, the additional fee increases again.
Note the wording: this is on top of the permit price, not instead of it. A permit that lapses in July costs you the renewal plus half again.
Beyond the money, a lapsed permit is an operating problem. You are not licensed to serve, and in a restaurant with a bar program that is most of a weekend's revenue.
What changed for private clubs?
Act 762 of 2025, effective 5 August 2025, removed the requirement that a private club also be a non-profit 501(c)(3).
That is a meaningful change in a state where roughly half the counties are dry and restaurants serving alcohol in those places typically hold private club permits. The old structure required a non-profit wrapper. That requirement is gone.
Because the change is recent, a great deal of published material still describes the previous rule, including some aimed at Arkansas operators. Confirm your own position with ABC rather than with a search result, including ours.

Do my bartenders need a state certification?
No. Arkansas law does not require bartenders or servers to attend training classes or be certified, and ABC does not issue licences or permits to individual servers.
That is a lower bar than several neighbouring states, and it is not a reason to skip training. Responsible service training protects you in a dram shop claim and it is cheap insurance for a room that runs late.
ABC does run an educational seminar on the first Friday of each month at 9:30 or 1:30 at 1509 W. 7th Street in Little Rock. Worth attending once if you are new to holding a permit.
What about delivery, and giving drinks away?
Third party delivery services must apply for and receive a Third Party Delivery permit and comply with Act 157. If a delivery platform is moving alcohol from your restaurant, that permit question is real and it is worth confirming which party holds what.
And a rule that surprises people: if you hold an ABC permit you cannot give alcohol away for any reason. No complimentary glass for the table that waited, no shift drink poured on the house, no bottle as a prize in a raffle. Build that into your comp policy and into your POS permissions so a well meaning manager cannot do it at eleven at night.
One more that saves arguments: the 1,000 foot distance rule from schools and churches applies to retail liquor stores. A restaurant serving alcohol is not subject to it.
A calendar you can actually use
Early May, start the renewal. Confirm your permit class, your entity details and that your Miscellaneous tax account is active and clear, because ABC requires it.
Before 30 June, renewal submitted. 1 July, late fees begin at half the permit price. 30 August, the late fee escalates again. 28 October, the end of the second band.
Alongside that, keep your comp and void permissions tight in the POS year round, since the give-away rule is absolute and the record of what left the bar is the record you will be asked for.
